From May 2002 I was a councillor in Islington for 8 years. As a councillor I have been cabinet member for community safety with responsibility for licensing and public protection, including environmental health and legal services, and with responsibility for the way the council worked with over 40 partner organisations, the police and fire services among them. I was also cabinet member for performance of all council services with additional responsibilities for procurement.
Previously, I chaired enquiries in public into medical and rehabilitation services for stroke patients, water supply and mains renewal, local post offices, children's nutrition, CCTV, and workforce development of the council's own staff. I was a member of a regional five-borough committee investigating paediatric and maternity services.
Scrutiny is often an activity which is remote from the public. I was successful in taking scrutiny to the doorstep, gaining a public following and press interest in the investigations I led. I will do the same as a member of the London Assembly, whose main role is scrutiny of the Mayor.
In addition to serving an NHS Trust board, I have previously been a member of the boards, governing bodies or management committees of:
Roles within the Lib Dems
I am currently completing my third year as a member of London region candidates committee, where I have mentored parliamentary candidates across London during two general election campaigns. I have also been a member of the London region executive and was secretary of my local party for a number of years.
I have acted as returning officer for the selection of a number of parliamentary and London Assembly constituency candidates. I have chaired Lib Dem Federal Conference on three occasions. I've enjoyed working with local parties across London both as a campaigner and in my other roles and am doing so again in the campaign for the London Assembly.
